France Televisions has commissioned a remake of original Belgian format, The Expedition.
Three 8 x 60' seasons of the epic adventure reality series set in Greenland, Namibia and Patagonia have already aired in Belgium on Play and SVOD channel STREAMZ, produced by the award winning indie Roses are Blue. In The Expedition, eight celebrities are challenged to navigate extreme environments, testing their endurance, teamwork, and resilience in the face of nature's toughest conditions.
The new French series is set to air next winter and was filmed in Greenland earlier this year. The series was commissioned by France Télévisions and produced by Warner Bros. International Television Production France.
The show takes viewers on an extraordinary journey of survival in some of the planet’s most extreme environments. In Greenland, braving the desolate Arctic Circle Trail in the depths of winter, contestants face bone-chilling temperatures as low as -40°C (-55°C felt), pushing their physical and mental limits to discover what they’re truly capable of. Under the guidance of a seasoned polar expert, the group begins with extensive training before facing the brutal reality of Greenland's icy wilderness. Battling exhaustion, self-doubt, and the ever-present threat of nature’s might, the expedition tests their endurance and teamwork. Despite these struggles, the group has proven to find strength in moments of camaraderie and the simplicity of life on the ice.
Bruno Henriquet, president at WBITVP France said: “This show has been, by far, one of the toughest I’ve ever had to oversee. From geopolitical uncertainties to extreme, even by local standards, weather conditions, we had it all. But I think that the best answer and true testament to the strength of this format, is that even with all this turmoil what truly shines is the human adventure. Seeing those celebrities under a new light, sharing both a personal and a common goal, pushing themselves to their limits… will make viewers feel like they are in the Expedition themselves…But let’s not forget our main character: Greenland. Such a beautiful setting with awe-inspiring landscapes, and the best possible back drop for such a great adventure. Can’t wait to share this wonderful and emotional show to the French audience.”
Simone de Pruyssenaere de la Woestyne, managing director at Primitives said "We're incredibly proud to see The Expedition make its first international journey with such outstanding partners in France Télévisions and Warner Bros. France. The format's unique blend of spectacular adventure and authentic human storytelling has resonated strongly with Belgian audiences, and we're thrilled to see it travel to a major international market for the very first time. This commission marks an important milestone for the format, and we can't wait for French viewers to embark on the journey themselves."
Featured in Belgian newspaper De Standaard’s top-5 TV shows of 2024 and winner of Kastaars, the Belgian media awards Best New Tv Program of 2024, the show combined “gazing at snowy landscapes” with schadenfreude as audiences enjoyed watching celebrities struggle in the wild.
