Impressive return of The Mole in Belgium

The waiting is finally over… and Belgian viewers  gave a big thumbs up en masse to commercial channel VIER on February 1, 2016 for the launch of the long awaited new series The Mole. With no less than 942 469 viewers, good for a market share of 32,9% in 4+ and an even more impressive 45% in the 18-54s, the first episode of The Mole dominated the prime time slot, drawing viewers away from both the traditional market leader Een, and leading commercial broadcaster VTM. Shot on location in Argentina, this fourth series of The Mole marks the end of a fourteen year hiatus for the Golden Rose winning reality format, which last topped the ratings in Belgium in 2001.
 
North of the border and now into its sixteenth series, the Dutch version of the format: Wie is de Mol? continues to dominate the ratings across all channels and all day parts on public broadcaster NPO1 (AVROTROS) in its new Saturday evening prime time slot, with consolidated audiences of well over 2,8 million and shares of up to 35%*, making it the third highest rated show of week 3 in the Netherlands.

Elsewhere in Europe, interest in the format remains high – 2015 saw the launch of the first ever French series on M6 and RTL TVI in Belgium, and options are currently running in Italy, China and Turkey, and last but not least, there is also a brand new series of The Mole in production in Poland, set to air on TVN in 2016, where, just as in Belgium, the previous series aired almost 14 years ago.
